The book opens with an excellent discussion of how differences in ways of life between the Indians, the French, and the English led to inevitable conflict. One of the book's many strengths is the way in which Marrin explains how many of the practices of the time, especially those of the Indians, are now considered barbaric, but were largely accepted at that time.
